excuse #10: i’m not good with technology

i hear this one all the time.  agents and brokers tell me that they’re technology challenged, and therefore avoid getting involved in social media.  “i’d do facebook,” they tell me, “but me and technology don’t mix.” social media isn’t about technology.  it’s about connections, conversations and developing relationships.  technology is only the tool that gets [...]

top 10 excuses for avoiding social media

i’ve spoken in front of several thousand real estate professionals in the past year, and i’ve had great response to my message that we have to engage in the social spaces on the web if we’re going to stay competitive.  heck, even stay in business! still, i do have some recalcitrant brokers and agents that [...]

don’t get crazy with status syndication

there was a recent interview i read of a social media consultant’s take on status update tools that syndicate or “autoblast” your status to numerous social networks.  you know the tools – ping, hootsuite and so on.  this individual suggested that people avoid these tools entirely.  well, as i’ve said in the past, there is [...]

modern day hatchet job

big brand realty recently had a client that wasn’t too pleased with their listing agent’s marketing of the client’s home.  having found no sympathy from the managing broker at big brand real estate, the consumer decided to post several scathing commentaries on highly trafficked sites on the web.  unbeknownst to big brand realty, several parties climbed on [...]

facebook smackdown

in a recent exchange of missives between some real estate practitioners on facebook, i couldn’t help but wonder, do these people know these exchanges are visible? are they cognizant of the fact that everyone in their networks can see their posts? do they not know how a wall post works? oh yeah? it all started with [...]

i’d like to buy a vowel…

if you’ve been in this industry even a short time, you’ve noticed the onslaught of letters – a.k.a. designations – following behind many agents’ names. achieving these designations can represent quite an accomplishment and an investment of time and money, not to mention gathering some worthwhile knowledge and skills to provide a higher level of [...]

green? are you sure?

don’t get me wrong.  i’m all for the national association of realtors green initiatives.  education, designations, resources on their website, pr and advertising campaigns.  let’s face it – they’ve got it goin’ on when it comes to heightening environmental consciousness. but when you’re closing transactions that require 6 pounds of paper to fulfill every party’s [...]

overwhelmed, oblivious or ostrich?

i’m seeing posts on facebook that clearly violate most states’ advertising requirements, and tweets that would cause ambulance chasing attorneys to salivate over the chance to sue an agent and company over their breach of fiduciary duty. not to mention all the possible violations of article 12 of the realtor code of ethics. it’s crazy to say the least.
